Produced in limited numbers during the Sampson era — the original run of Matchless production before the company's 1999 closure — the Dirt Box is a true all-tube overdrive and preamp built to the same uncompromising standard as the amps that made Matchless famous. Handwired point-to-point with a hand-wound transformer, it runs on a pair of 12AX7 preamp tubes and delivers everything from a clean boost through mid-gain overdrive to full-on high-gain distortion. The circuit draws its inspiration from the Marshall Plexi preamp topology, giving it a thicker, more aggressive voice than the better-known Matchless Hot Box, which leans more toward the company's signature AC30-influenced chime.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhere a lot of tube overdrive pedals give you gain and a single tone knob, the Dirt Box goes further with a full three-band EQ — Bass, Mid, and Treble — alongside Gain and Level controls.
